Meet the Middle School Team

At Lucy School, our educators are more than just instructors; they are dedicated guides committed to fostering a nurturing and stimulating learning environment. Our teaching team comprises individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded educational experience. Today we’d like to introduce you to our dedicated and enthusiastic Middle School team:

Tracy Brown, Social Studies

Tracy is entering her 10th year of teaching and 3rd year at Lucy School. Tracy graduated Magna Cum Laude from Salisbury University with a focus in Elementary Education (1st-8th) and Earth Science. She is a Sarah. D. Barder fellow with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and particularly enjoys working with twice-exceptional students. Tracy spent several years homeschooling her children who are now proud Lucy School students! She has a strong affinity for project-based, arts-integrated learning. When she’s not teaching Tracy can be found reading, adventuring, or performing with the dance troupe, Anam Cara. Drawing inspiration from the great Ms. Frizzle, Tracy encourages her students (and parents!) to, “take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!”

Laura Griffiths, Language Arts

Laura is entering her 3rd year of teaching humanities at Lucy School. Before working at Lucy School, Laura taught English and was a staff developer within the Montgomery County Public School System for over 20 years. She has two B.A. degrees from the University of Maryland in Journalism (concentration in public relations) and Theatre/English Education. Laura also has an M.A. in School Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University. If Laura were to describe her teaching in one word, she'd select 'perspective.' Laura believes understanding multiple perspectives around a topic helps students to develop critical thinking skills and to interact civilly.

Sue Comlish, Science

Sue is a dedicated teacher who has been teaching middle school science at Lucy School since 2019. Before coming to Lucy School, she taught AP environmental science and general biology in Boonsboro. She holds a M.A. in Education, a B.S. in Environmental Studies, and a teaching certification in Secondary Biology. Sue is passionate about helping students achieve their full potential and is proud of her dynamic teaching style and ability to connect with students on a personal level. Her classes can be challenging but are also engaging and fun; she wholeheartedly believes that inspiring curiosity, questioning the nature of things, and working to develop and build understanding in science class helps children to better understand themselves, their peers, as well as the world itself.

Beth Hartner, Math

Beth is dedicated to an inquiry-based approach to teaching, believing in the power of curiosity and exploration in the learning process. Beth holds a B.S. in Earth Sciences with a minor in Earth Systems from Penn State University. Beth is in her 4th year as a middle school math teacher at Lucy School. Beth is passionate about demonstrating math as a way of thinking and a powerful tool for understanding the world around us.
