Green and Clean Day
One of our favorite traditions at Lucy School is our twice yearly Green and Clean days. This tradition began 20 or so years ago by parent Susie Hill, who envisioned a day for families to work together in community to plant the garden and beautify the campus. This idea took root and after several years, it blossomed into two schoolwide days of learning, exploration, and service to the land we love so much.
This tradition is held twice yearly, once in the fall and once in the spring. This year our focus was our Pond. Our teacher committee planned activities that spanned ages and interests, and opportunities for buddy classes to learn together.
Favorite activities included:
Exploring the properties of water, such as cohesion, with hands on experimentation.
Creating a landscape of the pond using natural materials with Ms. Elizabeth.
Identifying microorganisms found in the pond with microscopes, led by student leaders in our afterschool Flora and Fauna club.
Following the journey of a drop of water during a story walk, to learn about our rain gardens, swales, and riparian buffer zone.
Searching for wildlife around the pond.
Concocting elderberry syrup with Ashley Davis, a Lucy School parent and herbalist, who taught us about the folklore and beneficial qualities of the elderberry bushes we have on the property.
We ended the day with service to the campus: collecting trash, collecting black walnut and other seeds for planting, scraping lantern fly eggs, and weeding the sedge behind the green building.
Green and Clean is a memorable foundational educational experience for all of our students. What’s better than a day of learning, laughing, and fun outside?
