Language Development

Develop literacy and independence with various teaching strategies to promote independence. Explicit skill instruction in systematic phonics, handwriting, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and comprehension. There is a strong emphasis on creative and informational writing throughout the curriculum. Early grades use decodable readers to apply and practice skills, and later grades read multiple novels to support the curriculum.

Social Emotional Learning

Problem-solving, communication, and understanding differing perspectives are inherent in our creative and social process. The arts stir curiosity and provoke questions and idea-sharing. Small class sizes promote a sense of community, belonging, and relationship. Class meetings are a tool for resolving issues that arise and developing social skills. Extended outdoor time provides ample opportunities for joy and collaboration.

Mathematics

Focus on fundamental understanding, fluency, and problem-solving with hands-on curriculum, manipulatives, and textbooks. In the Elementary program, our students move from concrete experiences to more abstract mathematical concepts with multi-step problems and formulas.

Creative Arts & Process Drama

The arts require children to engage their imaginations and stretch their creative thinking abilities. Students create, participate in, respond to, and analyze high-quality and meaningful musical, visual, and dramatic arts experiences daily. The emphasis is on technique, content knowledge, and vocabulary. In process drama, the teacher and students create an imaginary dramatic world to explore particular problems, historical periods, and experiences.

Science & Social Studies

Students are engaged in hands-on, integrated projects exploring concepts that link their lives and experiences with the larger community. Young children use all of their senses to gather information about the world around them. Teacher-guided exploration supports science observation and building content knowledge with various opportunities, materials, and tools. Students develop a strong understanding of the natural world through organic exploration and hands-on investigations.
