Morning Meeting Science with PreK 4’s
“Let’s answer the morning question!” Each day, our friends discovered a different object on the bench outside of our classroom. Using popsicle sticks with their names written on them, students made predictions about whether the object would sink or float. Our scientists made their hypotheses based on what the material is made of, its size, its weight, etc. After careful investigation, they placed their own popsicle sticks into a jar labeled “sink” or “float.”
“One…two…ready, let’s count!” Together, using a steady beat, our mathematicians counted the number of popsicle sticks in each jar. We listened closely as friends shared their opinions on why they thought the object might sink to the bottom of the jar or remain floating at the top. Occasionally, our guesses were based on experiences we had already had. For example, something made of a similar material may have floated in our swimming pool or sunk to the bottom of our bathtub.
Then would come the moment we had all been waiting for: testing the object! “Ohhh, wow!” or “What? Why?” students exclaimed as they observed the experiment being conducted. They engaged in discussions with each other about what they noticed and compared answers. These experiments let us dive deeper into our scientific thinking and consider an object's density and buoyancy to get ready for tomorrow’s question!
